The No-Nonsense Proofreading Course Review

Can you tell us a little bit about yourself and how you found the course Proofread Anywhere?

I’m a mom of two girls (aged eight and ten), and I live on a small farm in the north of New Zealand. We have a few sheep, chickens, ducks, lots of bees, a couple of cats, and a retired greyhound. I have always wanted to work for myself, especially since farm life is so idyllic—the last thing I wanted to do was commute forty minutes into town every day to work for someone else. I love working with words—I was the kid reading anything that was put in front of me: the back of the cereal box, road signs, toothpaste labels. I trained as a journalist about thirty years ago and then worked for a newspaper for four years.

Following that, I worked as a graphic and web designer for about ten years—both roles were all about clear and effective communication, and proofreading, copywriting, and copyediting were just part of the job. When I had my girls, I was a stay-at-home mom for seven years, during which time I trained as a landscape designer.

I worked in this role for a couple of years, but when I moved to the farm, it was no longer a practical option as it would have involved too much driving (we live quite remotely). I needed a job that I could do from home—where I could choose my own hours and set my own income—and one that I really enjoyed. So, I went back to my love of words and went online to look for proofreading work. I took a proofreading and copyediting certificate in New Zealand, but I wanted a US qualification so I would be confident working in both US and UK English. That’s when I found Proofread Anywhere.

Is the course self-paced? How long did it take you to complete the course?

It is a self-paced course. I was really keen to get through it quickly as money was getting pretty tight. I took about a month to complete the course, but I was lucky because I wasn’t working and had a lot of spare time to work through it.

The Proofread Anywhere Ignite Plus version has exams for you to take. How hard were they and were you nervous before taking them?

It is a rigorous course, and I was a bit nervous about passing, but if you work through everything Caitlin has set out, then you should have no problem with the exam. The essays really do prepare you well for the exam—there are forty to proofread in the course. I looked at the essays like they were my teachers—each one giving me something new to learn.

Did the course help you find work and how long did it take for you to find work after taking the course?

Yes, the course definitely helped. It built up my confidence, and I felt secure in the knowledge that I was on the right path.

It was a slow burn getting work—I passed the exam in November, and it took until April before I started building up a good client base. The course is just the beginning. Once you’ve passed, you then have to put in the hard work to market yourself and attract clients.

If you are currently working and rely on a steady income, I would recommend doing the course in your free time and then proofreading as a side hustle. Once you’ve got a steady income and a good client base through proofreading, then quit your day job. It’s risky to quit your job before you do the course because you may not land a client immediately.

How do you find work as a Proofreader?

I joined freelancing sites and started networking online with other editors. The coronavirus impacted my local face-to-face marketing, so I relied on the freelancing sites for landing clients. On the flip side, the virus lockdowns meant I had more work online because people had more time to write.

My clients are from all over the world: the US, UK, Denmark, Lithuania, Singapore, India, Canada, Mexico, Japan, and Australia. There are many ways to market yourself—joining writers’ groups, approaching bloggers (there are more than three million blog posts written every day!), emailing government departments, schools, advertising agencies, or companies that produce a lot of marketing material—anyone who writes anything may need a proofreader. I use my website more like a business card rather than relying on it to hook clients. I sometimes find it hard to put myself out there, which is why I like the freelancing sites; however, they do take a hefty commission, so if you can land your own clients, the profit is all yours.

What did you like about the Proofread Anywhere course?

I loved how thorough the course was in teaching me the finer points of being a proofreader. The practice essays honed my attention to detail and taught me myriad punctuation and grammar rules. I thought I had a good grasp of language, grammar, and punctuation before I took the course, but there was so much more that I had to learn. The Facebook community is fantastic. I’ve met so many great people online, and it’s incredibly supportive.

What did you not like about the Proofread Anywhere course?

There wasn’t really anything I didn’t like about the course. It was very focused, and as I mentioned before, the support is fantastic.

Can you tell us your results after taking the Proofread Anywhere course?

I am now working flat out. I joined a couple of freelancing sites, Upwork and Fiverr, and I get the majority of my work through them. It took a while to get going on these sites—I would have submitted about sixty proposals on Upwork before landing my first job, and my gig sat on Fiverr for a couple of months before I scored a client. Once you start getting reviews, the work just takes off. Within a couple of weeks, I had paid for my course. I have just landed a great contract which will take my earnings to about $3,500 since early April (approximately a month).

Do you think the Proofread Anywhere Course was worth it and why?

Yes, absolutely, I think it was worth it. It really kick-started my career as a proofreader and copyeditor and gave me the confidence to just go for it. I do recommend diversifying if you can. If you have other skills you can offer clients, such as copyediting, ghostwriting, or book formatting, they are an added bonus and could put you one step ahead, but they’re not essential for you to start your career as a proofreader.

Any advice for someone on the fence about taking the Proofread Anywhere course?

If you love words and are a stickler for spelling and punctuation, then go for it! You do need to have a good eye for detail and a strong focus, but these things can be learned and refined as you go through the course. It is tough in the beginning, and you do have to put in the hard work after you’ve qualified—you can’t just sit back and wait for clients to find you. But once you’ve got the ball rolling, it’s fantastic. There is so much writing out there, and all of it needs proofreading! I love this job, and I’m grateful every day that I’ve chosen this path. It allows me the freedom to stay at home on the farm and be there for my girls when they are with me.

So there you have it. This is a totally honest review of the Proofread Anywhere course that gives a pretty realistic outlook of what you can expect if you were to take the course.
